Is your truck ready? R-454B and R-32 are mildly flammable (A2L) — and they're what's in new equipment now. Work through this checklist to find your gaps before you roll up to the job.
How it works: check off what you already have. Each item explains why it matters in plain English and what to get if you don't have it. Your progress saves on this device. At the end you get a readiness score, a buy list, and a safety briefing you can print or share.
Heads up: this is a readiness guide, not legal advice. Rules vary by state, city, and equipment maker — anything tagged verify locally deserves a check with your local authority or the OEM manual. EPA 608 certification is still required on top of A2L training.
Charge-limit quick check
Code (UL 60335-2-40) limits how much A2L can go into a room: max charge ≈ room volume × LFL × 0.25 safety factor. Punch in the room to sanity-check a system charge.
Simplified per the UL 60335-2-40 concept — real code calculations include more factors. LFL values vary slightly by source; the override field lets you use your refrigerant's SDS value. Always verify against the OEM manual and local code.

Fix first — critical gaps
Your buy list
Everything's checked — nothing to buy. Nice.
Safety briefing — the non-negotiables
No open flame until the system is fully recovered and the area is ventilated. This is the #1 new habit vs. R-410A work.
Ventilate confined spaces. A2L vapor pools low — basements, closets, and attics need active airflow before and during work.
Cylinders upright, secured, capped — in the shop and the van. Relief valve must stay in the vapor space.
Charge blends as liquid, by weight. R-454B charged as vapor drifts off its mix ratio.
EPA 608 ≠ A2L training. Your 608 stays valid, but it never covered flammable refrigerants.
Label everything red. The next tech to open that system must know it's flammable before touching a port.
Document every job. Refrigerant type and amounts recovered/charged — it's often a legal requirement, and it wins disputes.
