The short answer
Code (UL 60335-2-40) caps how much mildly flammable A2L refrigerant can go into a room: max charge ≈ room volume × LFL × 0.25. For a typical 12×12×8 ft bedroom, that's about 5.4 lbs of R-454B. Bigger room, bigger allowed charge — smaller room, watch out.
Max charge chart
Worked from the formula below with 8–9 ft ceilings. Your room, your numbers — run the exact check in the calculator linked at the bottom.
| Room | Volume | Max R-454B | Max R-32 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small utility room, 6×8 ft | 384 ft³ | 1.8 lb | 1.8 lb |
| Small bedroom, 10×10 ft | 800 ft³ | 3.8 lb | 3.8 lb |
| Bedroom, 12×12 ft | 1,152 ft³ | 5.4 lb | 5.5 lb |
| Living room, 15×20 ft | 2,400 ft³ | 11.3 lb | 11.5 lb |
| Open-plan space, 20×25 ft (9 ft ceiling) | 4,500 ft³ | 21.3 lb | 21.6 lb |
Notice the pattern: a small room fills up fast. A 3-ton system carrying 8–10 lbs of R-454B does not belong on a tiny interior room without mitigation — that's exactly the install this check exists to catch.
The formula
Max charge (kg) ≈ room volume (m³) × LFL (kg/m³) × 0.25
- Room volume — length × width × ceiling height of the smallest room the refrigerant could leak into.
- LFL — the lower flammability limit: the lowest concentration in air that can ignite. R-454B: 0.303 kg/m³. R-32: 0.307 kg/m³. Values vary slightly by source — your refrigerant's SDS wins.
- 0.25 — the safety factor. The limit assumes the entire charge leaks into the room and still stays at a quarter of the flammable concentration.
Worked example, 12×12×8 ft bedroom: 1,152 ft³ = 32.6 m³. 32.6 × 0.303 × 0.25 = 2.47 kg = 5.4 lbs of R-454B.
Why the limit exists
A2Ls like R-454B and R-32 are mildly flammable — hard to ignite (roughly 1,000× the ignition energy of propane), but not impossible. If a whole charge leaked into a small, closed room, the concentration could reach a flammable level. The charge limit, plus the leak sensors and mitigation fans built into new A2L systems, keeps that worst case from ever getting close.
